Moon Volleyball - Balloon ‘moon’ volleyball , 2 teams

Getting to know you…

While on the circle, leader moves into the centre and drops a balloon, hanky or stick and calls a name out at the same time.  That person must RUN and catch the item before it hits the ground.  They then do that same and call another person.

Gravity – what is gravity

Galileo ball drop – hold a ping pong ball and a golf ball in the one hand.  Ask the Joeys to watch the tray of sand NOT your hand.  Drop the two balls (obviously at the same time!) which lands first?  The golf ball marginally BUT they both land at roughly the same time showing that weight has little effect on things falling.  Try the same thing with a sheet of paper and a scrunched up sheet of paper, show that air has the effect of slowing the sheet of paper but not the ball of paper.  Air does affect how things drop but Galileo showed everything is pulled down to earth at the same rate – it does not depend on their size or weight.  The Apollo 11 moon landing did the experiment in 0 gravity… it is a great bit of video to prove the point.

Spinning planets

Need newspaper balls attached to a long string.  Twirl the ball above your head, it is attached to you (the sun) by gravity.  Now swing and release your planet – how far can you fling your planet?

Phases of the Moon

Explain the different phases of the moon.  Go outside if dark and see what phase the moon is in.  You could keep a long each week of the moon.

Paint the Moon

Draw a circle round a plate as a template on a black bit of paper.  Mix some flour in the white paint to make it gloopy and lumpy.  Paint the moon then using a bottle tops stamp out craters. Stick stars stickers around your moon.

Joeys under the blanket  -See if we remember everyone’s names?

Sun, Moon, planets…

Sun (phew it’s hot!), Moon (sleep), Pluto (run to the corners far far far away…), Jupiter (blow raspberry – biggest gas planet!), Saturn (spin around arms out), Mercury (run around fast – it’s the fastest moving planet!), Earth (YEHHHH home!), Venus (woo hoo I’m gorgeous!), Neptune and Uranus (Brrrrr it’s cold!), Mars (???yummy Mars bar!)

DAY & NIGHT

Dim lights; ask what Joey Scouts think it would be like if it were always day, or always night time.  After, talk about why we really have day and night; talk about movements of the sun, earth and moon.

This happened when the earth was new, before there were any people in the world.  There were only birds and animals.  Rabbit walked in the forest.  "There is not enough light", Rabbit said.  "I cannot see where to walk.  I shall use my magic to make more light."

"There is enough light", a voice said.

"Rabbit looked, but it was dark and he could not see.  "Who are you?" Rabbit asked.  The voice answered, "Tobota, the Owl.  And there is enough light in the world."

"Owl, there might be enough light for you", Rabbit replied, "but I cannot see where to walk.  I shall call a council.  I shall call all the animals, and we shall see that there isenough light in the world."

Rabbit sent a belt made of beads to all the animals.  The belt carried a message:  "A council is to be held.  Come."  And all the animals knew what it meant.  Owl sent a similar belt to all the birds.  "A council is to be held.  Come."  And all the birds read it.

All the animals and birds came and sat around the council fire.

"There is not enough light in the world", Rabbit said.  "We must have more light."

"There is enough light in the world", Owl said.  "We do not need more light."

Buffalo said, "You are right, Rabbit.  There is not enough light in the world.  There is not enough light to see where the grass is growing.  There is not enough light to see where the forest begins."

Some of the animals said, "You are right, Buffalo.  There is not enough light in the world."  And some of the birds said, "You are right Buffalo.  There is not enough light in the world."

But Raccoon shook his head.  "You are right, Owl", he said.  "There is enough light in the world.  Our enemies cannot find us because it is dark.  We are safe."  Then some of the birds and some of the animals said, "You are right, Raccoon.  There is enough light in the world."

"I shall settle this", Rabbit said.  "My magic is strong."  And he began to try his powers.  As fast as he could, he said, "Light Light Light Light."

"No, I shall settle this", Owl said.  "My magic is stronger than yours.  Night Night Night Night."

Not stopping to breathe, Rabbit said, "Light Light Light."

Not stopping to swallow, Owl said, "Night Night Night."

Buffalo warned, "Be careful, Rabbit.  Do not say Owl's word, or you'll lose and we'll have night all the time."

Raccoon warned, "Be careful Owl.  Be careful not to use Rabbit's word, or we'll have day all the time."

Rabbit said, "Light Light Light."  Owl said, "Night Night Night."  Then his tongue slipped, and he said, "Light."  But Rabbit's tongue slipped too and he said, "Night."

So neither Owl nor Rabbit won.  Their magic only half worked.  And that is why, in the world today, we have night part of the time and day part of the time.  So every creature on the earth gets his wish at least half of the time.
