‘Mr. and Mrs. Brown first met Paddington on a railway platform. In fact, that was how he came to have such an unusual name for a bear, for Paddington was the name of the Station’. Thus began A Bear called Paddington by Michael Bond, first published in England in 1958. Paddington arrived in England from Darkest Peru after stowing away in a ship’s lifeboat - he had been sent out into the world by his Aunt Lucy who had gone to live in The Home for Retired Bears in Lima. Paddington has a habit of getting into difficult situations, but everything always turns out alright for him in the end. In 1975, the books were made into the first Paddington TV series directed by Ivor Wood.

Games/Craft Information:

Bear Hugs

Dance around – when the music stops Leader calls 2, 3, 4, 5 etc and Joeys must bunch into groups and ’hug’.

Teddy Bear's Footsteps This game is a variation of the classic game "grandmother's footsteps".

Leader starts off as the bear, stand at one end of hall and turn your back from all the other children. No peeking!

All the other children are hunters. You need to line up at the opposite end of the hall.

When a leader says "GO!', hunters have to start taking small steps to reach the bear - but you have to be very quiet, otherwise the bear could catch you!

As soon as the bear turns around, hunters have to freeze and stand as still as statues. If the bear sees you moving, you are sent back to the start. Repeat the round once the bear has turned around and a grown-up says "GO!" again.

Teddy Tunnel  - teddy bear and Joey scouts - played as with Tunnel ball

Joeys pass the teddy between legs to the end last player runs to the front of the team and repeats, change having the teddy being passed over their heads, when this round is complete try alternating under and over, underarm..

Teddy Bear cars..

Use a mini milky way bar as the car, ‘glue’ on smartie wheels with melted chocolate and make a slit in the top of the car with the end of a tea spoon and poke in a tiny teddy driver.  Recipe and picture on line “teddy bear cars”

Where’s Peru?

Blindfold – stick your sticker on the map of south America where you think Peru is….

What to take on a voyage?

Put a selection of ordinary and whacky items at one end of the hall and a suitcase at the other.  Joeys must take in turns to run up and select something to take on a voyage.  Try and have a discussion about why each item might be useful!

Under your hat – relay

Paddington has a habit of keeping things ‘safe’ under his hat.  Even cupcakes!  Can you run up the hall with an egg/lemon under your hat.

I’m going to darkest Peru and I’m taking a …………..

Start a story… I am going to Peru and I'm taking a tent (starts with T) next item must start with T

Spare:

 Flapping buzzy bees

2 teams, can you flap your tissue buzzy bee from one end to the other and into the marmalade pot!

Joeys Scouts act out the song using their teddy bears.

The Bear song

The other day (echo)

I met a bear (echo)

A great big bear (echo)

A way up there (echo)

All together

The other day I met a bear

A great big bear a way up there.

Other verses done in the same fashion

I looked at him

He looked at me

I sized up him

He sized up me

He says to me

Why don’t you run

I see you aint

Got any gun

And so I ran

Away from there

But right behind

Me was that bear

Then up ahead

I saw a tree

A great big tree

Oh luck me

But the lowest branch

Was ten feet up

I’d have to jump

And trust my luck

And so I jumped

Into the air

But I missed that branch

A way up there

Now don’t you fret

Now don’t you frown

Cause I caught that branch

On my way down

That’s all there is

There ain’t no more

Unless I meet

That bear once more
