Game: Promise and Law Relay

Make up one set of promise and law sentences per team. Put these at one end of the hall. Joeys Scouts are lined up in teams at the other end of the hall. On “go” the first Joey Scout in each team picks up one piece, and returns to team. Then the second Joey Scout picks up a piece, and returns to team. This continues until all the pieces have been retrieved and each team then assembles the promise and law. Once finished each team sits in a straight line and yells out Help Other People.

 

Game: Match the Law Pieces

Write “CARES” on half the pieces of cardboard and “SHARES” on other half of the pieces. Draw different borders around each word, so that the Joey Scouts can tell which word goes together when they are cut in half to make the pieces. Cover both sides with contact. Cut each in two pieces in different places.

Divide the Joey Scouts into two lines. Give one side one half and the other side the other half. Have them run freely in a designated area. When “JOEY SCOUT” is called they have to find their partner by matching the word. Once they find each other they yell out the Joey Scout Law. Swap cards and play again.

Craft: Help Other People Chart

Joey Scouts draw a picture of how they can help at home at the bottom of the chart. Take home and during the week do some help at home jobs. Bring back following week and ask the Joey Scouts what they did to help at home.

 

Game: Circle Promise/Law

Joey Scouts are seated in a circle. First Joey Scout walks around and tips each Joey Scout saying Joey Scout Promise or Law, on last word that Joey Scout races around the circle and back to place (as per Duck Duck Goose).

 

Game: Three Blind Mice

Three Joey Scouts are blindfolded and they call out “we can’t see”. The Leader says “who cares?” A Joey Scout from the others calls out “I care” and another two also volunteer. They give instructions to lead the blindfolded to a safe place, through crocodiles, minefields (plates) and other nasties; to safety on a treasure island. These three now become the ones who care for another three blindfolded Joey Scouts and are instructed through the trials. A helper may be needed to be near the blindfolded ones to give that security some of the children need.

Game: Stuck in the Mud

One Joey Scout is “IT” - tags other Joey Scouts and they freeze, stuck in the mud, until another Joey Scout frees them by crawling beneath them. Have to help each other.

 

Game: Mother’s Pouch

Leaders stand with arms outstretched to form a pouch. One Joey Scout is a dingo and turns his/her scarf to the back, and chases the other Joey Scouts. If tagged the Joey Scout becomes a dingo too. Joey Scouts are safe in mother's pouch but only one Joey Scout can be in a pouch at a time. If another Joey Scout is being chased the Joey Scout in the pouch must care and share and hop out of the pouch and let the chased Joey Scout in.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Anthony Ant’s Big Promise
Joey Scout Resource Book – Promise and Law

Anthony Ant and his family live in the Snowy Mountains. His mother was very ill. She was very worried because winter was rapidly approaching and with it the snow season.

Now everyone knows that ants don’t go outside when it snows; they block up their doors and stay snug inside their cosy hole in the ground. Before they can do this though, they collect all the food they can find and store it in their holes so that there’s enough to last all winter.

Poor Anthony’s mother was so sick, she was unable to collect the food for her family; so she called Anthony to her bedside and told him that he, as the oldest, would have to do this very important job for her. She made him PROMISE that this would be done.

So Anthony took a bag and went to collect food. He felt really happy that his mother had trusted him to do such an important job. No sooner had he set out, when his best mate called out “Hey, Tony, let’s go and play chasings with the others”. Poor Anthony wanted to play with his friends so badly, but he’d made the promise to his mother and he knew that he couldn’t break a promise, so he said goodbye and continued his search.

He spotted some biscuit crumbs dropped by a human. As he reached the crumbs, another ant sneaked up behind him and shouted “BOO!” Poor Anthony got the fright of his life. It was his cousin, Andrew, and he was rolling around on the ground laughing his head off. Andrew and Anthony always played hide and seek together. “Come on, Anthony. It’s your turn to hide now.” Anthony was tempted to forget gathering food and the PROMISE to his mother, but he knew that no matter what happened, he couldn’t break a promise. He said goodbye and continued on his way.

It wasn’t long before Anthony had collected lots of food and he was getting tired. He put his bag down and rested under some shady reeds. Louise the Ladybird lived in the reeds and she wanted to play too. Anthony explained that he couldn’t and Louise went off to find some other friends. Anthony felt sad and lonely.

The wise old owl, who was great at solving problems, saw that Anthony was sad and flew down to see why. Anthony explained that he was tired of collecting food and he would have rather been playing. The owl listened then said “You know what you have to do Anthony. Your mother is sick and the family will starve if you don’t keep your promise. You know that promises are very important things and you must do everything you possibly can to keep your promise”. With this advice, Anthony set off once again. He gathered so much food that his family could stay underground for a whole year, if they wanted to. When he finally arrived home, his mother was very pleased with him. Anthony had kept his promise and this made him happy because you should do your best to keep a promise.
