Games/Craft Information:
Many Aboriginal childrens games are based on hunting and throwing skills.
Game: Buroinjin – played by the Kabi Kabi people of Queensland
Equipment: ball
Divide JS into 2 teams, spread out around the hall. Goal either end of the hall. One player starts in the middle of the field with the ball and runs towards a goal. As soon as he is tagged he must hand over the ball to the player who must turn and run in the opposite direction. There is no home goal a goal is scored for the team at either end of the field.
Game: Click stick obstacle relay
Equipment: Obstacles, clacking sticks
Divide JS into 2-3 teams, line the teams up at one end of the hall, at the other end is a pair of sticks per team. In the middle place obstacles (chairs, tables, brooms, parents anything you have available). The first JS must sneak past all the obstacles to their set of sticks and clack them together once, goes back, the second JS sneaks through and clacks twice etc. Keep going and see how many clacks you can get up to. Helpers keep count of clacks, let them know when they are out.
Game: Skin the Serpent Relay
Equipment: Hoops
Method: In teams, JS hold hands front to back - reach one hand forward and the other back between your legs to grasp the extended hand of the person behind. A hoop is placed over the head of the first in line; the team is to work hoop to the back of the line. Add more hoops to each line so that two, three or more hoops are being worked down each line. When hoop gets to end of line, the last Joey Scout runs to the front of the line, grabs the hand of the person at front, who is now second, and starts the hoop moving down the line again.
Game: Kai:– ball game from Torres Strait
Equipment: balloons, hoops or chalk circles
Each team has one balloon and they stand in a circle and bat the balloon in the air. That player moves out of the circle and the next moves in and bats the ball back inot the air. If the balloon hits the ground or moves out of reach of the player in the circle then the team starts again.
Game: Yiri:– target game from Dunk Island and Queensland
Equipment: box on a string, newpaper balls
Each team has a pile of ammunition and they line either side of the hall. A leader drags a box on a rope down the hall while the teams try and throw balls into the box. Team with the most or any balls in wins!
Spare….
Game: Koolchee:– ball game from Lake Eyre
Equipment: balls, drink cartons
Each team has a row of milk cartons, they stand in line facing each other. Each team has to try and know their cartons down without accidentally knocking their opposite teams cartons.
Craft: Serpent Bracelet
Equipment: Card stock, crayons or markers, scissors and tape.
Method: Print the pattern below onto light cardboard, JS to colour the rainbow serpent and cut out and wear (as shown in the picture). A small piece of tape will keep the bracelet in place.
