Games/Craft Information:

Spinning snakes:

Colour in and cut out the snake shape.  Attach a piece of thread to the head and hold it above a heat source the snake will spin in the warm rising air.

Feather on a plate

Set up a simple obstacle course.  Joeys have to carry one or two feathers on a plate – waiter fashion!  If you hold the plate flat the air moving past will push the feather off the plate – if you tip the plate slightly forward the air will hold the feather in place!

Flappy Frogs

Using a tissue frog and a plate – flap the frog down the hall and back using a plate to create a breeze.

Experiments

Tissue in a cup.  Push a dry clean tissue into the bottom of a plastic cup.  Invert the cup and push it down into the water.  If you push it straight down the air will remain in the cup and protect the tissue from getting wet.  You might not be able to see air – but it is there!

Magic cup: Half fill you cup with water and place a card ontop.  Carefully invert the cup and card and release the card.  It will stick to the bottom of the cup holding in the water.  The air pressure pulls the water up inside the cup and the air pressure pushing up on the card from outdie is greater than the weight of the water on the card!

Balloon Magic: Hold two blown up balloons together infront of your face and blow between them.  The balloons will stay together as the air pressure pushing them together is greater than the force of your blowing.

Power of Words: Lay a piece of paper flat on the table and smooth down.  Put a ruler underneath and bang the ruler down.  You would think you could lift the sheet of paper off the table – but the air pressure pushing all over the surface of the paper is too strong for you to lift!

Rob the nest

Put a pile of objects in the centre of the circle.  Each person has to try and gather as many items into their next as they can.  Once all the items have gone from the middle you can rob other peoples nests instead until the leader calls stop.  Winner has the most items!

Dust Pictures

Sprinkle Talc on the floor and let the joeys draw a picture.  Vacuum up the dust in the end.

Spinning snakes– try your spinning snakes and see if they work.

Pan pipes: Make pan pipes out of straws cut to different lengths and see if you can play them.

Sound circle– sit in a circle and see if you can follow the leaders rhythm or sound
