Bless all joeys everywhere,
Help them remember their promise to share.
Guide them all safely home today
And watch over them while they work and play.
Amen
Games/Craft Information:
Protect the Earth
Equipment – chalk to mark circle, balloons.
On the floor draw a large circle to represent the earth. Have several balloons to represent space monsters, who are trying to take over the earth. Joey Scouts stand around the edge of the circle and try to keep the monsters from touching earth (the floor inside the circle). Joey Scouts cannot stand on the earth but must remain outside the circle. They can use their hands, feet or try to blow the balloons to keep them up in the air.
Spotlight Environment
Have someone place items outside the hall that don’t belong in the environment such as plastic bags, balls, other rubbish, chairs etc. Go on a walk with the Joeys (torches if dark) and spot things that belong and things that don’t belong. Collect leaves for craft while on the walk. When returned from the walk make a list of all you have seen and discuss what belongs and what doesn’t. How can we care for our local environment?
Leaf Rubbings
Use leaves found on walk to create pictures using crayons and rubbing.
Leaf Hide and Seek
Place leaves or pictures of leave hidden around the hall for joeys to find. This can be done in teams or individually or as a whole mob depending on number of children.
Flashlight Game: Statues
See who can keep a straight face in this after-dark game in which life imitates art.
HOW TO PLAY: The leaders pretend to be a tour guides in a darkened museum. While the guides turn their backs have the statues spread out and each strike a pose. The guides must then walk among the artwork, shining the light on the stock-still players and describing them with silly names and funny stories of what they depict, all in an attempt to make the statues laugh or catch them moving. As in most museums, there's no touching allowed, but the guides are encouraged to quickly -- and unexpectedly -- move the lights among the sculptures to try to catch one unawares. If a statue does move or make a noise, he or she is out.
Action Story
Give the Joeys a character each and depending on numbers more than one child can play each character. All the Joeys play the part of the children in the story. Joeys stand on the parade circle as the story is told. When they hear their character they cross the circle making appropriate noises/actions to go with their character. Actions in brackets are just suggestions the children will come up with their own.
Characters:
Koala (yawn)
Emu (gulp gulp with matching hand movement)
Kangaroo (hop hop)
Kookaburra (laughing)
Wombat (waddle)
Fish (mouth like a fish and hands like fins)
Platypus ( swish swish and smooth movements)
Children (cheers and running)
All the animals in the bush were excited to be going to the bush Olympics. The Kangaroo had been practicing her high jump for weeks and she was determined this year to beat Wombat who some say had cheated last year. Emu who had once again organised the Olympics was busily bossing everyone about when Kookaburra warned there was a group of children nearby and the games may have to be called off. Platypus was disappointed as she was sure that this year she was going to beat Fish in the swimming race. All the animals gathered in the clearing to ask Koala what should be done. He was the wisest of the bush animals although Emu wouldn’t admit it. “Have Kookaburra keep watch and alert us if the children get too close. I am going back to sleep,” said Koala. Well it was time for Kangaroo and Wombat to race and in the end Kangaroo won by a nose! Then the swimmers had their turn with a close call but Fish just pulled ahead at the end disappointing Platypus once again. Suddenly Kookaburra came down in a flap. The children were approaching. Everyone quickly hid. It was okay. The children were a mob of Joey scouts and knew how to care for the environment. They did not leave any rubbish in the bush and they did not disturb any plants or trees. Some even spied the hidden animals and quietly took photos. Koala, Kookaburra, Emu, Wombat, Platypus, Kangaroo and Fish were all amazed that a mob of children could be so well behaved.
